Benicia Community Information

Benicia residents enjoy access to numerous local parks, a full-service marina and two state parks. Benicia Capitol State Historic Park is the site of California’s third seat of government (1853-54.) It is the only pre-Sacramento capitol that survives. The original building has been restored with reconstructed period furnishings and exhibits.

Benicia State Recreation Area covers 720 acres of marsh, grassy hillsides and rocky beaches along the narrowest portion of the Carquinez Strait. Cyclists, runners, walkers and roller skaters enjoy the park’s 2 ˝ miles of road and bike paths. Picnicking, bird watching and fishing are also attractions. The marshland area on Dillon’s Point is a particularly favorite place for fishing.

The Benicia Unified School District serves the educational needs of the community and is regularly ranked in the top 15% in the nation for excellence. In addition, students attending Benicia schools consistently achieve high SAT scores, with many of the schools being recipients of distinguished school awards.

Thanks to its location adjacent to the Interstate 680 corridor and to I-80 via I-780 and Benicia's low facility/land costs and low tax base, the city has a strong economic base. The city is also home to the Port of Benicia, a deep water, privately operated port providing access to San Francisco Bay to the west and the Sacramento Delta to the east. The city is just 40 miles from Oakland International and 50 miles from San Francisco International airports. Union Pacific Railroad operates two major rail lines and related trackage serving Benicia businesses.

Benicia, once the State Capitol, was founded in 1847. In 1850 it was the first city to be incorporated in California. Monterey was the second. After serving only one year as the State Capital, the Legislature relocated the State Capital to Sacramento.
